Austin Says Funding Cuts Threaten Terrace Anti-Poverty

Skeena M-L-A Robin Austin lashed out at the government yesterday, for cutting gaming grants to the Terrace Anti-Poverty Group Society.

In the Legislature yesterday, Austin demanded the Liberals restore funding to the organization.
"This organization gives free food, clothing, vitamins to children, they are the main rental and tenancy advocates to keep people off the streets, and every Christmas, they deliver donated presents to needy children," said Austin, "yet if this government doesn't reverse their grinch-like policies, the Terrace Anti-Poverty Society may not be around to deliver presents to kids next Christmas."

Housing and Social Development Minister Rich Coleman promised to look into the matter..

The board of the Anti-Poverty Society met in Terrace yesterday, and vowed to struggle on, despite the loss of its core funding.
President Tanya Gauvin says the board will take a more active roll in the management of the society, to take some of the pressure off of Executive Director Stacey Tyres, the group's only paid employee.
