New Garbage Rules Coming

New rules are coming for residents of Kitimat when they put out their garbage.

In an effort to make residential neighbourhoods less attractive to bears, Council has told staff to draft bylaw amendments.

Councillor Joanne Monaghan says the first targets the time of day people can put their trash out on the curb.

Right now, garbage cans can go out the night before pick-up.

Soon, 4:00 on the morning of pick-up will be earliest.

As well, between pickups, residents will be required to store their garbage in bear-proof containers or enclosures, such as sheds, that bears can't get into.

Monaghan says the amendments will likely be passed in the coming weeks, but not soon enough to help during this bear season.
